After former FBI profiler Hunter Zolomon was crippled by Gorilla Grodd, he tried to undo the tragedies of his life by using the Flashes' Cosmic Treadmill to time travel. It didn't work and instead caused an accident that imbued Zolomon with accelerated time powers that emulate super-speed. Zolomon decided that to make his former friend the Flash (Wally West) a better hero, he must test him by becoming his greatest villain, so he made himself a costume based on Barry Allen's enemy Professor Zoom, and became the new Zoom.
